The inside Story
Shots from the Simien Mountains and National Parks in East Africa.
The Gelada is a baboon-size monkey found exclusively in the high-altitude Simien mountains of Ethiopia. They are the only primates that are primarily grazers, eating grass, seeds, roots and flowers. Their numbers have reduced from about 440,000 in the 1970s to about 200,000 in 2008.
Geladas have chunky fingers allowing them fast and natural rock climbing. Gelada males are bigger and hairier than females. The lead male is dominant to all other family members until challenged and replaced by a younger opponent.
